Proper cashmere care: How to keep your favorite piece beautiful for years

Cashmere is among the most luxurious materials in the fashion world. The fine fibers of the cashmere goat make sweaters, scarves, and cardigans incomparably soft, light, and warm. But precisely because cashmere is so high-quality, it also requires proper care. Many people shy away from this – completely unnecessarily, because with a few simple rules, your cashmere garment will stay beautiful and cozy for a long time.

1. Washing less is more

Cashmere is naturally self-cleaning. Instead of frequent washing, it's often enough to air the garment after wearing it. Leave it overnight on a hanger or lying flat in fresh air – and unpleasant odors will disappear.

2. Gentle hand wash or wool program

If washing is necessary, please do so as gently as possible.

  • Temperature: maximum 30°C

  • Detergent: special wool or cashmere detergent

  • Program selection: Hand wash or wool program without a strong spin cycle

Hand washing is ideal: gently move cashmere back and forth in lukewarm water – do not rub, wring or squeeze, as this can cause the fibers to felt.

3. Dry properly

After washing, gently squeeze out the excess moisture and roll the garment in a towel. Then, lay it flat, reshape it, and allow it to dry. Never place it on a radiator or in a dryer – that would be the end of the cashmere.

4. Pilling is normal – and not a quality defect.

Even the highest quality cashmere is prone to small pills, especially in areas of friction. These can be gently removed with a pilling comb or wool shaver . Important: never press too hard to avoid damaging the fibers.

5. Store correctly

For storage, lay cashmere flat rather than hanging it to prevent it from stretching out of shape. Especially in summer, it's recommended to store the pieces in cotton bags or boxes and add cedar wood or lavender sachets to repel moths.

6. Cashmere is worth it – with proper care, a companion for life.

Investing in cashmere pays off: If properly cared for, your favorite sweater or scarf will last for many years – without losing its shape, color or fluffiness.
